Kozani is the capital and largest city of the Western Macedonia region. It is built on the mountain chains of Vermio, Bourinos and Pieria, 15 km northwest of the Polifitos lake, at 720 m altitude above sea level. It is 123 km far from Thessaloniki and 470 km from Athens. Its surface is 3,562 sq. m. and its population is calculated around 155,324 residents. It constitutes the crossroads, where Epirus meets Macedonia and Thessaly.
