Brief Description: Herbaceous, annual plant with upright or ascending sprout, 10-45 cm high. Divided leaves, the lower ones hairy with stalk and the upper ones stalkless. Flowers in few-flowered to many-flowered inflorescences, rarely solitary. Four petals, red-purple or rosy, with darker spots at the base. Numerous stamens with dark-coloured club-like filaments. The fruit is ovate or ellipsoid capsule with hair along its length.

Particular Features: Genus Papaver includes some very interesting species with pharmaceutical properties and the most important one is P. somniferum (commonly opium), from which opium is extracted, as well as alkaloids like morphine and codeine.
